UNIVERSITY HOUSE ART EXHIBITION

Our next Artist-in-Residence is Tamara Marrington.

If a painting can act as a gateway where our subjectivities meet then by all means meet me at the threshold.

I’m interested in the way emotive and sensory response can be triggered by an image, and in turn the ways in which an image can manifest itself; a painted surface, a collection of words, an installation. I draw on subjective experience as a starting point – for me art making is an existential by-product. My paintings are borne out of an emotive engagement with the world around me; I experience, I see, I take. When I say taking this most often means photographing, but I also mean overhearing and jotting down. I think of both of these things as a kind of ‘pocketing’, a sentiment of “this is for later”.

My painting practice allows me to remember, revel and indulge in my takings. Secretly make links and weave threads between diverse elements in order to construct narratives that expand well beyond the photographic fragment, the feeling or the tangle of words they once were. To augment memory. I want you to come with me.

Tamara Marrington grew up in Perth, Western Australia before relocating to Melbourne in 2016 to commence study at the Victorian College of the Arts. She is currently in her final year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts, and in 2017 was the recipient of the prestigious Stuart Black Memorial Drawing Scholarship. She has exhibited at the Margaret Lawrence Gallery, VCA Art Space and Moores Contemporary Art Gallery in Fremantle.
